John Phillip Holland
FATHER OF THE MODERN SUBMARINE
Known as the ‘father of the modern submarine’, John Philip Holland initially built a clockwork model of a submarine in his early experiment with underwater vessels. He later produced ‘Holland Boat #1’ and following this, a more workable model known as the Fenian Ram was financed by the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States. After many setbacks in subsequent years, the United States navy bought the first Holland Class submarine from the Holland Torpedo Boat Company and it was used extensively by the American and British navies, during World Wars I and II.
