Arriving in the United States penniless at the age of twenty, within ten years James Butler was a millionaire having established one of the nation’s largest grocery stores ‘James Butler Grocery County’. By 1890 his wealth was such that he bought his first string of racehorses and he went on to build his own racetrack, the Empire City at Yonkers Raceway, New York.
