Hans SloanePHYSICIAN, COLL OF FLORA & FAUNAIn 1687 Hans Sloane travelled to Jamaica and returned one year later with no less than eight hundred plants which were accompanied by detailed scientific notes of his time on the island. By the mid 1720s, Sloane had become the greatest collector of flora and fauna, books, drawings, maps, medals, coins and paintings ever seen in England and his collection subsequently became the basis for the establishment of the British Museum. Sloane Square, London is named in his memory.
